INCISION CHOICES FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION

For the past 30 years I have been one of the few local plastic surgeons facile in the use of peri-areolar incisions for the insertion of implants. However, my original technique of breast augmentation was with the use of inframammary fold incisions. With the recent advent of the Natrelle 410 (gummy bear) implants, a longer incision is required. Therefore I have returned to the use of the fold incision with style 410 implants for patients with small areola/nipple size.

Unfortunately, many potential patients are not aware that even with traditional implants, they still have a choice of inframammary fold incisions. This approach is much simpler than the areolar approach and requires less OR and anesthesia time. Therefore, the cost to the patient is reduced by about $500. However, for most patients, the additional time and cost is worthwhile in terms of scar noticeability, implant placement and the rarity of nipple numbness with the areolar incision.
