Can Botox® Help Fight Depression?

Botox has always been known as the revolutionary anti-wrinkle treatment that smoothes frown lines and restores a more youthful appearance. And in the past few years, many off label uses have become popularized, including the treatment of migraines, muscle spasms and excessive sweating. Interestingly enough, a new study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research suggests that Botox may aide patients that struggle with depression.

According to Scientificamerican.com, a controlled study on the effects of Botox was performed to investigate if it helps patients that struggle with major depressive disorder and were not respondent to medications. In the group that received Botox, just above the eyebrows, 46% reported decreased depressive symptoms whereas the placebo group only report 9% in reduced symptoms.
