Daniel’s theme in this painting is around Asclepius, the God of Medicine and Healing in the ancient Greek religion. The setting is in the garden of healing with Sappho, a lyrist and poetess and heralded in Greek literature as one of the nine muses. Also pictured are statues of Aesclepius’ daughters Hygieia (“Hygiene”) and Panacea (“Universal Remedy”). The rod of Asclepius, a snake–entwined staff remains a symbol of medicine today.
