EXERCISING IS SYNERGISTIC WITH SLIMLIPO

According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and Rueters, a new study has revealed the importance of exercise following SlimLipo or other Liposuction procedures. The Brazilian study followed 36 women over a four month period after a liposuction procedure. According to the study, all of the women still had flat bellies, but the ones that did not exercise had an increase of visceral (abdominal cavity) fat. Fat does not automatically accumulate elsewhere after liposuction but if weight gain occurs due to poor life style habits, the fat tends to accumulate in other or deeper locations.

Visceral fat is the fat that "exists deep within the abdominal cavity. It has been linked to metabolic disturbances and an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In women, it is also associated with breast cancer and the need for gallbladder surgery," according to ASAPS. What is significantly different about SlimLipo versus other techniques of liposuction is that skin tightening continues for up to 12 months. Therefore, loss of visceral fat through weight loss is synergistic with SlimLipo. However, weight loss after traditional liposuction or a “tummy tuck” may result in looser skin.

STEM CELL BREAST RECONSTRUCTION UTILIZED BY CELEBRITY SUZANNE SOMERS

In January of 2011, Dr. Lewis Obi became one of the first surgeons in the United States to utilize the Adivive autologous fat grafting procedure, the first FDA-approved fat processing unit pioneered by MediKahn and Palomar Medical Technology.

June 3rd commemorates National Cancer Survivors Day around the United States. On this day, we honor our friends and family that have survived cancer and demonstrated that “life after cancer diagnosis can be meaningful, fulfilling, and even inspiring.”

We have many patients at Obi Plastic Surgery Clinic that are cancer survivors. From breast cancer to melanomas, these patients have proven that diagnosis of the “C” word doesn’t mean the end. So it’s this day we honor the hopeful warriors that never gave up and continue to encourage other cancer patients to do the same.

NEW FLORIDA LAW PROHIBITS LIPOSUCTION IN UNLICENSED LOCATIONS

Dr. Lewis Obi’s Samuel Wells Surgicenter was the first AHCA (Agency for Health Care Administration) state-licensed comprehensive surgery center in the state of Florida. In order to receive this licensure, the surgery center must maintain a higher level of staffing and physical plant requirements.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed legislation on Friday May 25, 2012 (that goes into effect on January 3, 2012) that will prohibit liposuction to be performed in any facility other than a hospital or licensed surgery center. The law takes aim at “bargain-priced liposuction” providers that don’t follow the standards and safety procedures that licensed health facilities practice to ensure patient safety. 14 Floridians have died in the past decade due to complications resulting from liposuction being performed in these types of facilities. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) web site, over 300,000 patients received liposuction in 2011 making it the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure in 2011.

"It's a safety measure to make sure people don't die," the president of the Palm Beach County Society of Plastic Surgeons told the Sun Sentinel. "The people who don't follow the [standards] now are just cutting corners to have a low price." According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) web site, over 300,000 patients received liposuction in 2011 making it the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure in 2011.

ASAPS also recommends that patients can "ensure their safety during liposuction and other cosmetic procedures by checking that their doctor is licensed and board-certified and that their procedure is done in an accredited hospital, surgical center or office-based surgical facility."

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

We all think of Memorial Day as the beginning of summer and Labor Day as the ending weekend of summer and typically mark these events with get-togethers and bar-b-ques. But not many people know that the first Memorial Day was celebrated on May 1, 1865 in remembrance of the Civil War dead. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans that died in all wars.

DR. LEWIS OBI, SPEAKER AT TWO ADVANCED SYMPOSIA

Dr. Lewis Obi was one of the primary speakers at the Advanced Symposium on Skin Aesthetics and Body Sculpting held at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square on Saturday, May 19, 2012.  In his 183 slides and videos, Dr. Obi shared his results of more than 500 patients over a 42 month period. Advanced surgical and non-surgical procedures were shared with his large audience of aesthetic surgeons from the U.S. and abroad.

He is scheduled to present again at another Advanced Aesthetic Symposium on June 9 in Fort Lauderdale. Last year Dr. Lewis Obi lectured at six major symposia and meetings. He is not only active in sharing his experience with his colleagues but he is currently involved with many active clinical research projects in the area of stem cell fat and lasers.
