SPRING IS A TIME FOR RENEWAL

Spring is seen as a time of growth, renewal and of new life (both plant and animal). The term is also used more generally as a metaphor for the start of better times and I am optimistic that is the case. Most of the recent blogs on our website have been around innovative technology, new techniques and novel devices in the field of plastic surgery. As one of the senior plastic surgeons in the U.S., I have been fortunate to continue participating in many new advances in the area of lasers, stem cells and more recently with the introduction of the Natrelle Style 410 Form Stable breast implants. 

There has been a paradigm shift in our specialty as evidenced by the most recent changes, many of which I have been professionally involved with. During the past five years, I have integrated more new techniques and technology into my practice than I experienced during the previous decade. We are indeed approaching the "Spring of Renewal" both in Plastic Surgery as well as other areas of Medicine. There are better times ahead!

During the first weeks of Spring, my schedule includes sojourns to New York City, Boston, Boca Raton and Los Angeles.  At the end of March I will be working at the laser laboratories of Palomar Medical in Boston in order to move on to the next phase of the FDA cleared cellulite laser project.  In mid April I will be sharing my tentative “Gummy Bear Implant” results at the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons meeting in New York. The following weekend, I will be performing live surgery and lecturing at Palomar’s Aesthetic Summit Meeting at The Boca Raton Resort & Club.

Finally, it’s off to the California Stem Cell Treatment Center accreditation conference on the weekend of May 2-4, 2013. I will be meeting with Dr. Mark Berman in Los Angeles and then on to the accreditation conference in Rancho Mirage, California. I became an affiliate member of CSCTC in 2011 and now investigating the prospects of establishing the first therapeutic stem cell treatment facility in Jacksonville.

DR. LEWIS OBI MAKES APPEARANCE ON WJXT MORNING SHOW WITH BRUCE HAMILTON

The new Natrelle style 410 “Gummy Bear” implants were discussed on the “Morning Show” today during a live interview with Dr. Obi today. Bruce Hamilton asked several incisive questions around these new form-stable solid matrix implants. There has been intense public interest around the “410” implants which offer many advantages over implants currently used in the U.S. One week ago, Dr. Obi became the first Jacksonville plastic surgeon to use the Gummy Bear implants on one of his patients. He is scheduled to perform a replacement operation tomorrow on a patient requiring replacement of her implants. 

This was the third live Channel 4 TV interview for Dr. Lewis Obi in as many years. More than three years ago, Bruce Hamilton interviewed Dr. Obi regarding his pioneering introduction of a new laser technology SlimLipo™-LifeSculpt. More than two years ago, the first FDA cleared Adivive stem cell processing system was installed in the Obi Plastic Surgery Clinic. Coincident with the downturn in the economy five years ago, there has been a paradigm shift in plastic surgery with a plethora of advances. This included new techniques, new technology and the introduction of new devices such as the Natrelle 410 breast implants. Dr. Lewis Obi continues to be an active leader in the “New Age of Plastic Surgery”, a title he has used during his last three lectures (New York, Los Angeles and Sydney). His schedule next month includes Boston, New York and Boca Raton.

FIRST NATRELLE STYLE 410 “GUMMY BEAR” IMPLANT SURGERY IN JACKSONVILLE PERFORMED BY DR. LEWIS OBI

Last Wednesday, March 6, Dr. Lewis Obi performed the first breast augmentation with the use of the new Form Stable Natrelle Gummy Bear Implants. He was told by the Allergan representative that it was the first operation of it’s kind performed in her district which includes south Georgia and northeast Florida. Of significance is that Dr. Obi also performed a limited breast lift and inserted the implants through an areolar incision which rarely results in a noticeable scar. Because of the solid matrix filler of the Style 410 implants, the majority of plastic surgeons insert these implants through a long fold incision.

Dr. Lewis Obi is scheduled to appear on "The Morning Show” with Bruce Hamilton on Wednesday,  March 13 at 8am to discuss the Gummy Bear implants. These implants have been used in Europe and Canada for more than 15 years with a patient satisfaction in excess of 95%.

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Patrick Maxwell headed up the FDA study over a seven year period with 941 women which led to the FDA clearance for the Gummy Bears on February 21. The next day Dr. Lewis Obi was certified by Allergan and received his first implants 3 days later.

This week, Dr. Lewis Obi will be performing his first cosmetic breast augmentation with the use of the Natrelle Form-Stable Style 410 breast implants. Dr. Obi received his first shipment of these implants last week, becoming one of the first plastic surgeons in the U. S. to receive these newly approved devices. Refer to our recently posted March Newsletter for more information on the Natrelle 410 breast implants.

As announced in our blog posted last week, Dr. Lewis Obi has a large back log of patients who have awaited months to years for the clearance of the Gummy Bear implants. However consultations may be requested if you are seeking a primary augmentation, revision of a past augmentation or a breast reconstruction. Natrelle (Allergan™) representative Stacee Wenk has been an outstanding resource for Dr. Obi in his quest to provide this valuable new device to his patients. Of significance is that Dr. Lewis Obi, as the senior plastic surgeon in Jacksonville, has had enormous experience in the area of breast surgery. He was one of the first plastic surgeons in the U.S. to introduce saline implants in the 1970’s and since then continues to move forward with the latest technology. Other technologies useful in the area of breast surgery includes SlimLipo™ non surgical breast lifts and Adivive™ stem cell fat grafting for breast reconstruction.

DR. LEWIS OBI CLEARED BY ALLERGAN TO BEGIN RECEIVING NATRELLE STYLE 410 FORM-STABLE (GUMMY BEAR) IMPLANTS THIS WEEK

On the evening of February 21, 2013, Dr. Lewis Obi was notified by Allergan corporation’s Stacee Wenk that The Food and Drug Administration approved the Natrelle 410 “Gummy Bear” implants for use in the United States. The next day, Dr. Lewis Obi became one of the first plastic surgeons in the U.S. to become certified as an approved plastic surgeon to use these implants with his patients. Allergan, Inc. manufactures the Natrelle 410 implants which have been successfully used in Europe and Canada for more than a decade. The. FDA finally approved the Natrelle 410 “Gummy Bear” implants after reviewing the study that was conducted on 941 females over seven years. There have been significant complications observed in previous breast implants, including, implant removal, tightening of the area around the implant (capsular contracture), uneven appearance, high incidence of re-operation and infection. The capsular contracture (hard distorted breasts) incidence is 75% less apt to occur with the new “410” implants. Patient approval of the solid shape-stable “Gummy Bear” implants is 96.5% in primary augmentation. Jeffrey Shuren, MD, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health said that the data reviewed has shown promising signs of long-term safety and high effectiveness with the newly released Shape Stable Natrelle 410 implants.

Dr. Lewis Obi, always on the forefront of new technology, will be receiving his supply of Natrelle 410 implants this week. To date, Dr. Obi’s practice has a back log of dozens of patients who are in need or have requested these new implants. These implants are suitable for women 22 or older and are effective both for cosmetic augmentations and for breast reconstruction after mastectomy. There is a slightly greater cost for these implants and the surgical technique has to be executed in a very precise manner by the plastic surgeon. It is Dr. Obi’s opinion that these procedures should be performed in a controlled licensed surgery center with an experienced staff of nurses, OR techs and anesthesiologist. Because of the solid and highly cohesive filler material of the 410 implant, a larger fold incision is required for most patients. However, expert placement and incision closure avoids noticeable scars in the vast majority of patients.

These limited areas may be safely and comfortably performed under local anesthesia and oral medications (Valium and/or Percoset). All SlimLipo treatments  are performed in our licensed operating rooms and may be completed in approximately 45 to 90 minutes. The majority of patients experience minimal bruising and mild to moderate discomfort with most patients returning to work the next day. Spring Surgery Special (March, April and May)

This spring, SlimLipo  of the abdomen, thighs and neck may be performed at a reduced cost if performed simultaneously with any breast surgery procedure. The usual fee for SlimLipo of abdomen is $4900 but when performed with a breast procedure, the fee is $3000. Similarly, SlimLipo of neck fee is reduced from $2500 to $1500 and the fee for thighs reduced from $4500 to $2500.
