DR. JOHN D. MURRAY UPDATE

Dr. Murray began his third month of partnership with Jacksonville plastic surgeon, Dr. Lewis Obi this month and is already establishing an active practice both at the Obi Plastic Surgery center as well as the major hospitals in Jacksonville. The partnership is evolving into an alliance geared towards comprehensive plastic and reconstructive care for the entire Jacksonville medical community. As was recently stated in the December issue of the Florida Doctor publication: "What happens when two Renaissance men come together to form an alliance geared toward comprehensive plastic and reconstructive surgery: Itʼs a masterpiece in the making and quite simply a work of art and science."

THE LEWIS OBI PLASTIC SURGERY CENTER'S FIRST NEWSLETTER

Our plastic surgery patients will be receiving our first newsletter this week which will be published on a monthly basis. The newsletter will be filled with the latest news from the rapidly growing fields of cosmetic, reconstructive and plastic surgery. We will feature upcoming procedures, techniques, and products that are making their way into the plastic surgery field. We will also highlight happenings within our office and with our staff. Dr. Lewis Obi and Dr. John Murray will also contribute commentaries on topics of interest.

DR. LEWIS OBI AND DR. JOHN MURRAY ARE FIRST PLASTIC SURGEONS IN THE U. S. TO RECEIVE PALOMAR MEDICAL TECHNOLOGYʼS LIPOKIT SYSTEM

During the first week in January, Palomar Medical Technology (manufacturer of the SlimLipo laser lipolysis system has selected Dr. Lewis Obi and Dr. John Murray to ship their first Lipokit Fat Processing Unit (FPU). This Bio-medical device was developed by Medi-Kahn Inc. and newly licensed by Palomar who acquired FDA approval for U.S. distribution. Based on medical research by South Korean plastic surgeon Hi Young Lee M.D., PhD., condensed fat processed by this system increases the population of stem cells thereby improving the retention of the transferred fat cells. Fat contains the highest population of stem cells of any tissue in the human body. The Lipokit is a closed system that allows the plastic surgeon to remove areas of unwanted fat (abdomen, thighs, etc), process the fat and transfer it as a natural filler within a closed sterile system in one sitting. Current techniques that Dr. Obi and other plastic surgeons have performed for decades are safe but with inconsistent results. Drs. Obi and Murray are both very excited to be on the cutting edge of this new technology with their first patients already on their surgery schedules. This new technique will be useful both in the area of aesthetic as well as reconstructive surgery. Large volumes of the patient's own fat may therefore be processed and used as a facial filler cosmetically and in the breast for reconstruction after mastectomy or lumpectomy. Practically every area of the human body may be a potential site for fat transfer with this technique.

MORE THAN 200 IN ATTENDANCE AT THE RECEPTION FOR DR. JOHN MURRAY

Our staff, pictured above, in attendance at the reception for Dr. Murray on the 9th of December where more than 200 guests and dignitaries attended the event. In addition to introducing Dr. Murray, the guests were provided with an art and clinic tour of our 12,000 square foot facility. Attendees from Los Angeles, New York, Boston and other distant locations were impressed with the display of world class art at the clinic. A Harpist (pictured right) and Violist played in concert with the other festivities of the evening. The Samuel Wells Surgicenter at the clinic displayed the latest laser technology in the area of laser lipolysis (Slim Lipo platform) as well as the Novodaq Spy imaging system. Dr. John Murray, Dr. Lewis Obi and Memorial Medical Center will be the first Jacksonville providers of this revolutionary technology vital for enhancing results of reconstructive breast procedures.

STEM CELLS DERIVED FROM ADULT FAT

Our November 17th blog mentioned the prospect of the Obi Plastic Surgery Clinic providing patients with the latest technology regarding the use of autologous fat fillers. Last week our facility was informed that we will be among the first providers of this new science. This will provide our patients with the option of large volume fillers for the face and other areas of the body utilizing the patient’s own fat cells. With this advanced procedure, fat may be taken from unwanted areas, concentrated into stem-cell rich fat and simultaneously transferred as a natural filler with more predictable longevity. As with the Palomar Slim Lipo technique of liposuction that Dr. Lewis Obi has performed on 250 patients during the past two years, this technique of fat transfer may be performed with minimal downtime. Both Dr. John Murray and Dr. Lewis Obi will be providing these procedures on patients at our Samuel Wells Surgicenter beginning next month. The applications of adult stem cell fat transfers in the mastectomy patient in the future is very exciting.
